Wilbur D. Haas, 95, of Navarre, passed away peacefully, Friday afternoon, March 8, 2024. Born May 8, 1928, in Dover, Ohio, a son to the late John and Minnie (Baumgardner) Haas, Wilbur graduated from the former Navarre High School with the Class of 1946. He earned his living as a truck driver with several years of safe and dedicated service to the former Deioma Trucking in East Sparta, before he and his late wife, Carolyn, created their own trucking company known as H&H Carriers.
A devoted husband, a loving and supportive dad, grandpa, great-grandpa and uncle, and a sincere and generous friend, Wilbur was a humble and grateful steward of all he had been given. His family was his source of true joy. A faithful and active member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, he served his faith community in several ways. He also served the Navarre community with energy and enthusiasm, completing terms as president of the Fairless and R.G. Drage School Boards, and Navarre Kiwanis, and as “the voice of the Falcons” at Fairless High School sporting events for more than 25 years.
He enjoyed keeping busy even after his retirement – but enjoyed his leisure time too! He followed area high school and college sports – especially the OSU Buckeyes, and he looked forward to spending sunny summer days on Lake Mohawk. He and Carolyn enjoyed traveling and together they had visited five continents.
Predeceased by his parents; his high school sweetheart and bride of 71 years, Carolyn J. (Hofsteter) Haas; sisters, Ruth, Martha and Jean, and brothers, Robert, John and David; Wilbur is survived by his children, Kathleen H. (Bob) Schaffner, of North Canton, and Susan M. (Ed) Whitmore, and Daniel S. Haas, all of Navarre; grandchildren, Sarah (Seth) Peterson, Matthew (Chesnee) Whitmore, Erin (Brian) Williams and Jenna (Andrew) Garlock; great-grandchildren, Adelyn and Nash Peterson, Cooper Whitmore, Bennett and Laurelei Williams, and Gavin and Thomas Garlock; his sister, Sue (Ramon) Young, of Canton; half-brothers, Jack and Eric Haas and half-sister, Connie Luthi; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at St. Paul UCC in Navarre. Rev. Dennis Landaw will officiate, and a private burial in Union Lawn Cemetery will follow. The family will receive condolences Tuesday evening, March 12, from 4 – 7:00 p.m. at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon, and thirty minutes before the funeral, Wednesday morning from 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. in the church. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers and staff of Hattie’s House Transitional Therapy House on the Bolivar campus of Hennis Care Center. They have also suggested memorial contributions made to either St. Paul UCC – 337 Main Street North, Navarre, Ohio 44662, or the Fairless Alumni Association – 320 Wabash Avenue, South, Brewster, Ohio 44613.
