Veon Roy Gainer, formerly of Massillon, more recently of Uniontown, Ohio, passed away peacefully, following a full life, Thursday afternoon, December 2, 2021. He was 92 years old. Born in Akron, January 20, 1929, a son to the late Roy and Mary (Stout) Gainer, Roy graduated from Akron Garfield High School with the Class of 1947. A gifted, natural athlete, he enjoyed all sports but excelled in baseball. A strong, left-handed pitcher, he was scouted while still in high school and was invited to a try-out with the Cincinnati Reds. He didn’t make the team but never lost his enthusiasm or love of the game.
Most of his professional career was spent with Glidden Paints, managing retail stores in Akron and Canton. He invested more than thirty years of service to the company before retiring in 1991. He married a Glidden co-worker, the former Elizabeth Jean “BJ” (Ries) Gainer, and they honeymooned together for forty years before her passing in 2009. They were charter members of Faith Community Fellowship in Massillon and were avid fans of Massillon Tiger football – season ticket holders, in fact, missing only one game in thirty years! Roy also enjoyed following the Cleveland sports teams and keeping current on their rosters and statistics. He had a special fondness for collecting and displaying Christmas ornaments and decorating for the holidays.
Predeceased by his parents and each of his siblings as well as his wife, BJ; Roy is survived by his daughter, Barbara (Fred) Micale, of Akron; and his grandsons, Mario (Lena) and Anthony Micale.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 9, 2021, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. Pastor Michael Kager of Faith Community Fellowship will officiate with private burial to follow. The family will receive condolences one hour prior to the services, from 10-11:00 Thursday morning in the funeral home.
