Shirley M. Wood, 91, of Massillon, beloved mom, grandma and great-grandma, known affectionately to many as “Grandma Shirley,” passed away quietly, Friday afternoon, January 14, 2022. Born in Massillon, March 27, 1930, a daughter to the late Earl and Alice (Merriman) Bordner, Shirley graduated from Washington High School with the Class of 1948. She was a full-time wife and mom who placed her husband and her children at the center of her life. While her health allowed, Shirley attended St. John’s United Church of Christ in Massillon. Devoted to her family and extended family, Shirley never knew a stranger, and creating life-long memories with special birthdays and holidays was her specialty! Nothing meant more to her than having everyone together. In her leisure time she avidly followed the Tigers, the Buckeyes and all of the other Ohio sports teams, and for a number of years she had also been an avid bowler. She was always up for a casino run and ready to try her luck at the slot machines. She also enjoyed playing the lottery and B-I-N-G-O as often as she could.
Preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray E. Wood; her son Kerry L. Wood; her sister, Janice and brother, Dan; Shirley is survived by her children, Doug (Tina) Wood, of Massillon and Debby Wood, of Columbus; her grandchildren, Trace, Scott, Hope and Ashley; great-grandchildren, Jaxton, Natalie, Colin, Makenna and Rylee; and her brother, Richard Bordner, of Massillon.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 20, 2022, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. Shirley’s niece, Rev. Pamela Jo Gable will officiate, and burial will follow in Massillon Cemetery. The family will receive condolences on Wednesday evening, January 19, from 5-7:00 p.m. in the funeral home as well as one hour prior to the services, from 12:00-1:00 p.m., Thursday afternoon. Face masks are required for all of those attending. The family has suggested memorial contributions made in care of the American Heart Association (at www.heart.org). Your memories and condolences are always welcome and may be added to our on-line guestbook at www.atkinsonfeucht.com.
