Robert L. Watkins, 86, of Massillon, passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, on Saturday morning, December 16, 2023. Born in New Philadelphia, Ohio, August 20, 1937, Bob graduated from Jackson High School and served honorably in the Army Reserve. A skilled heavy equipment operator and excavation contractor, in 1970, he partnered with his friend, Jack Helmick, to form H&W Contractors, Inc.
A faithful member of St. Barbara’s Catholic Church, Bob was a devoted husband and a loving and supportive dad and grandpa, who placed his wife, his family, and his faith at the center of his life. He treasured his family, especially his grandchildren and great-granddaughter and looked forward to spending time with them. He found relaxation and satisfaction in keeping his home and yard neat and trim. In his retirement and in his leisure time he still liked to keep active, biking, playing golf, tennis, and pickle ball.
Predeceased by his mother, Helen (Tschudy) Watkins and step-father, Lewis Watkins, and brothers, Jim and Dan; Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rita M. (Schmader) Watkins, of the home; their children, Anne Watkins (and Mike Cullop), Michael (Patricia) Watkins, and Dan Watkins, all of Massillon, and David (Terri) Watkins, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; grandchildren, Morgan, Kate, Lauren, Emily, Sarah, Will, Nate, and Amanda; and great-granddaughter, Cecilia. Also surviving are his brother, Sam (Debbie) Watkins, of Pickerington; and sisters-in-law, Mary (John) Sutton, of Pittsburgh, and Betty (Vincent) Matecheck, of Massillon.
Honoring Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends will mark his passing with a Funeral Mass, celebrated with Fr. John Sheridan at St. Barbara’s Church at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 21, 2023. The family will receive condolences one hour prior to the start of Mass, from 10-11:00 a.m. in the church. They have also suggested memorial contributions to advance the mission and ministries of Divine Mercy Parish at St. Barbara or the donor’s charity of choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. Your memories and condolence are always welcome and may be added here to Bob's guestbook.
