Richard Bordner Obituary

Richard E. Bordner, 90, of Massillon, passed away peacefully, early Friday morning, July 1, 2022.  Born September 26, 1931, a son to the late Earl C. and Alice M. (Merriman) Bordner-Noble, Dick lived in Massillon his entire life and graduated from Washington High School with the Class of 1949.  He attended Miami University (of Ohio) and received an associate’s degree from Kent State University. 

Mr. Bordner was a life member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Massillon.  He retired from Republic Steel Corp. in 1984, following 34 years of faithful service.  He served as Tax Administrator for the City of Massillon from 1987 to 1994.  He also worked for P.J. Bordner’s, Food-4-Less, Massillon Paint and Glass, and Skipco Financial Adjusters.  He served on Massillon City Council as 4th Ward Councilman from 1960-63, and as Councilman-at-Large from 1964-86.  He was awarded the Massillon Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 1961.  He was a member of Hiram Clinton Lodge #47 F&AM and other local York Rite Bodies, the Al Koran Shrine and the Massillon Social Unit.  He was a registered OHSAA high school baseball and volleyball official and held membership in the Canton Baseball Umpires Association and the Hall of Fame Volleyball Officials Association, the Hill Gang Association, Champion’s Homecoming Committee and Western Reserve Dalmatian Club.

Mr. Bordner was an avid sports fan and supporter of Washington High School athletic programs.  A long-time member of the Massillon Tiger Football Booster Club, he served as the club’s secretary from 1986-2000.  He was a charter member of the Tiger Sideliners, maintaining his membership continuously from 1957 to the present time.  He was also a member of the Orangemen and the Tiger Benchwarmers Booster Club.  He was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels of Stark and Wayne Counties from 1997-2016.

On December 31, 1949, Dick married the former Evelyn Berry who preceded him in death on December 5, 2007.  He is also predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Janice C. Householder and Shirley M. Wood, brother, Daniel Noble; and stepfather, Dale Noble.  Surviving are his children, Pamela Jo (Rhett) Gable, of Massillon, David R. (Cathy) Bordner, of Churchill, PA, Brenda Lea Drummond, of Perrysburg, OH and Thomas R. (Victoria) Bordner, of Gahanna, OH; grandchildren, Brian (Donna) and Kevin (Danielle) Gable, Rich (Ezichi) and Kate Bordner (Michael) Carrol, Jason (Sarah) and Christopher (Amanda) Drummond, and Evan and Maxwell Bordner; and his great-grandchildren, Lily, Jace, Amara, Mason, Hannah, Maddox, Chizara, Owen, Miles, Kade, David, Connor and Evelyn.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon.  Pastor Lisa Elliott will officiate and burial will follow in Massillon Cemetery where Dick will rest next to his wife, Evelyn.  The family will receive condolences on Tuesday evening from 5-7:00 p.m. and again, on Wednesday morning, from 10-11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s United Church of Christ (101 Tremont Avenue, SE, Massillon, OH 44646) or the Massillon Tiger Football Booster Club (PO Box 19, Massillon, OH 44648-0019). 

The family also wishes to express its deepest gratitude for the care and companionship provided by the staff at Danbury Senior Living of Massillon and the wonderful nurses and caregivers of Community Hospice and Palliative Care.
