Rev. James Arthur “Jim” Matthews, Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2025, just one day shy of his 85th birthday. Born February 23, 1940, James lived a full and vibrant life, leaving behind a legacy of his love for Christ and an example of a “good and faithful servant."
Jim graduated from Massillon Washington High School class of ’58, and retired from Mercury Stainless (formerly Republic Steel) after 30 years, and dedicated his life to the ministry, pastoring the Carrollton Bible Chapel for over 25 years. His ministry touched countless lives, reflecting his deep love for Jesus Christ and God’s word, The Holy Bible. James had a passion for classic cars, old cowboy movies, Massillon Tiger football, and coaching youth sports, including football, baseball, and basketball. During his life he was an active member of Calvary Bible Baptist Church in Canton, Canton Baptist Temple and First Baptist Church in Massillon, Ohio. Jim will be remembered for his love, faith, and unwavering dedication to his family. His presence brought joy to those around him and many in a time of need and comfort. His memory and his love for Christ will continue on through those who knew him and the countless lives he touched.
Jim was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 59 years, Susan K. (Coulter) Matthews and parents Imogene (Blocker) Keller and James Arthur Matthews, Sr. He is survived by his three sons, Mark, David, and Donald; his daughter-in-law, Carrie; his grandsons, Brandon, and Dawson; his granddaughter-in-law, Sarah; and his great-granddaughter, Sadie. He is also survived by his younger sisters, Joan Mack and Jill Johanning, along with many other loving family members and friends.
Honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration of Jim’s life will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2025, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. The family will receive condolences prior to the service, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Military honors will close the service.
