Oliver R. “Sonny” Boughman, 88, of Perry Township, passed away peacefully, early Wednesday morning, June 26, 2024. Born August 25, 1935, in Massillon, a son to the late Oliver “Booky” and Clara “Dubby” (Hindley) Boughman, Sonny attended Massillon Washington High School and was an area resident his entire life. An intuitive mechanic, even from an early age, he earned his living as a mechanic in the truck garage of the former Republic Steel Corp. in Massillon, retiring after 35 years of faithful service. He was happiest when he had a project to occupy his time – especially where cars were concerned. He loved cars and when it came to them, his rules were simple: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If it is, let me get a look at it. Don’t mess with my tools, and don’t bother me when I’m workin’.
A devoted husband, a loving and supportive dad and grandpa, a tender and sentimental great-grandpa, and a loyal friend, Sonny treasured his family and friends. Ornery and cantankerous, generous, and fun-loving – most of the time, his advice and opinions often came with no filter, so you knew exactly what was on his mind. He was a long-time fan of NASCAR from its earliest days and enjoyed watching the old television westerns. He loved car shows and often displayed his own “Big Blue” Ford Mustang. He looked forward to Monday morning breakfasts at McDonald’s with friends and fellow Republic retirees.
Predeceased by his parents, and his dear wife of 63 years, Virginia Ann (Kelly) Boughman; Sonny is survived by his children, Cindy S. (Terry) Fox, of Louisville, Ohio, Tami J. Beckel, of Sarasota, Florida, Russell L. (Kim) Boughman, and Steven C. Boughman, all of Massillon. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
The family will receive condolences beginning at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2024, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Navarre. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor M.D. Gammill officiating. Burial will follow at Union Lawn Cemetery.
