Mary L. Benson, 80, of Plain Township, passed away quietly but unexpectedly, early Thursday morning, August 10, 2023. Born in Muskegon, Michigan, June 27, 1943, a daughter to the late Victor and Mabel (Huffman) McWain, Mary had been an area resident since 1968. A licensed hairdresser by profession, she had several friends as clients whom she served in her home. But first and foremost, she was a homemaker; a devoted wife, and a loving and supportive mom and grandma to her three boys and her grandchildren. Her Christian faith and her family were the center of her life as her faith community became part of her extended family. An active member of Grace Fellowship in Canton, Mary taught Sunday school and enjoyed bible study. In her leisure time she enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
Predeceased by her parents; Mary is survived by her best friend and husband of 58 years, William L. "Lew" Benson, Sr., of the home; their sons, Michael A. (Anna) Benson, of Canton, William L. (Shannon) Benson, Jr., of Bisbee, Arizona, and Matthew T. Benson, also of Canton; and grandchildren, Morgan Benson and Makara and Jaden Kipper. Her sister, Carol McWain George, and brother, Fred (Pat) McWain, all of Michigan, also survive.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Mary’s life and homegoing with a service on Thursday evening, August 17, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. at Grace Fellowship Church in Canton. Pastor E. Keith Stephens will officiate. Honoring her wishes, cremation has taken place. There are no calling hours. Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon has been entrusted with arrangements. Your memories and condolences are always welcome and may be added to her on-line guestbook.
