Lanny Black Obituary

Lanny R. Black, 79, of Perry Township, passed away peacefully, early Friday morning, September 2, 2022.  Born in Massillon, September 22, 1942, a son to the late George “Bob” Black and Adah (Smith) Black, Lanny graduated from the former Navarre High School with the Class of 1960.

In his youth, while working with his father at Nickles Bakery, he enjoyed working on cars, hand-painting custom graphics and pinstriping, and engaging in the occasional street race.  He was inclined to create, manufacture, modify and repair anything to help others until he could physically no longer do so.

Very talented in graphic design, his career in signage began with hand-lettering billboards, eventually leading him and his wife to start a successful architectural signage company in the 1980’s, which was in business for over a decade.

He gained experience over the years which led to positions in project and production management working with EB Display and Adams Signs.

A devoted husband, father, and a loving, supportive “Pop-Pop” (who could be the occasional prankster,) Lanny was also a loyal friend, a teacher, a mentor; patiently passing along his knowledge and attention to detail to those willing to learn.

He was a man of quiet faith with a genuinely humble love for family and God.

Predeceased by his parents; and his wife, Rebecca Lynn “Becky” (Lanier) Black; Lanny is survived by his daughters, Tami (Adam) Finsel, of Englewood, Florida, and Jennifer Black, of Perry Township; and granddaughters, Megan (Daniel) Flood, Amanda Finsel and Katelyn Strong.  He will be laid to rest privately, next to Becky, in Oakwood Cemetery in Massillon.  The family will announce the time and location of a more fitting celebration of Lanny’s life at a later date.  Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon has been entrusted with arrangements.
