Kim L. Stangelo, CSM, USAR, Retired, 69, of Massillon, passed away peacefully, in the comfort of his home, on Monday evening, July 5, 2021. Born in Massillon, March 26, 1952, a son to the late George D. and Mona Jean (Barnes) Stangelo, Kim graduated from Washington High School with the Class of 1970. His professional life was one of service; enlisting in the US Army in September, 1970, he served honorably in Vietnam with the 283rd Medical Detachment – Helicopter Ambulance Dustoff. After 40 years as a federal employee and 38 years as a non-commissioned officer with the 137th Aviation Regiment of the Ohio Army National Guard, he retired with the rank Command Sergeant Major. His awards and decorations included The Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal, The Air Medal and National Defense Medal. As a professional soldier, he was recognized for his leadership and problem-solving skills. But he was also a man of faith; a loving and devoted husband, a supportive dad, a gentle, fun-loving grandpa and a loyal and dependable friend who placed his wife, family, and friends at the center of his life.
He could help without interfering, offer advice without judging, provide correction without sarcasm and temper the pride in well-earned achievement with humility. And that was pretty much his code for his personal and professional life.
He enjoyed spending his leisure time with the family; getting away for a while to fish or maybe a round or two of golf – especially if there was a chance to tease his brothers over one thing or another…!
Predeceased by his parents; Kim is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann “Patty” (Hampton) Stangelo; their children, Gina (Andrew) Herold, of Houston, Texas and Michael (Sarah) Stangelo, of Akron; grandchildren, Ethan, Spencer and Owen Herold and Isabella and Sofia Stangelo. Also surviving are his brothers, David G. Stangelo, of Alliance, Steve A. (Jan) Stangelo, of Wooster and Danny R. (Nancy) Stangelo, also of Alliance, several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
