Katherine L. Gorthey

Katherine L. Gorthey, 80, formerly of Massillon, passed away gently, in the late afternoon of Wednesday, February 19, 2025.  Born in Amsterdam, New York, April 16, 1944, a daughter to the late Clarence and Rebecca (Ballweber) Gorthey, Katherine had spent most of her life in the environs of The Great Sacandaga Reservoir (now Sacandaga Lake) in east central New York.  A life-long learner, an avid reader, and often self-taught, she successfully operated her own landscaping business, often planning and crafting designs for individual clients and cultivating several of them personally.  She was also a talented artist who enjoyed drawing and painting, even selling pieces of her work at informal showings.

Katherine was of Methodist faith.  She preferred a modest, practical, single lifestyle and enjoyed both the peace and quiet and the spontaneity it provided.  Friendly and outgoing, she was instantly likeable.  But her family and a few close friends were all she needed to feel socially fulfilled.  Even as her health declined, she stayed close to them and to her faith in the promises of Christ.

Predeceased by her parents, and brothers, Thomas, and Norman Gorthey; Katherine is survived by her sister, Carol G. (Joseph) Bokel, of Massillon, Ohio, and four nephews.

Following her wishes cremation has taken place.  No formal services are planned.  A private burial at Union Mills Cemetery in Broadalbin, New York will be completed later this spring.  Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon has been entrusted with immediate arrangements.  Your memories and condolences are always welcome and may be added here to Katherine’s on-line guestbook.
