John Jogerst Obituary

John P. Jogerst, 77, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, November 25, 2020. John was a lifelong resident of Navarre and graduated from Navarre High School in 1961.

Sergeant John Jogerst served his country during the Vietnam War. He was notably deployed to Thailand among other assignments before being honorably discharged and returning home to Navarre.

Once home, he continued to serve his community as a fireman with the Navarre Volunteer Fire Department. He demonstrated his care for fellow veterans as a long-time member of the American Legion and the Navarre Post of the VFW. He performed the duties of Honor Guard at the funerals of numerous veterans and completed a term as Commander of the Navarre VFW.

After graduating from Cleveland Barber College and serving an apprenticeship at Vince’s Barber Shop, he opened his own business, “John’s Barber Shop”, first in Brewster and eventually moved his establishment to Navarre. He became known as “John the Barber” to the citizens of both villages and kept his clients entertained with his upbeat personality and easy laughter while he clipped their hair.

John was an avid bowler and fisherman who also enjoyed all sports and bingo. His big heartedness extended to his friends in the animal kingdom. He was an active member of Fohl Memorial United Methodist Church as well as various civic fraternal organizations.

Preceded in death by his father and mother, Paul A. Jogerst and Helen E. Jogerst Amos; and brother-in-law, Charles R. Winkhart. John is survived by his sister, Bonnie L. Winkhart; nephews, R. Shaun Winkhart and Randall S. (Suzzi) Winkhart and niece Rayann S. (Mike) Huntsman. He is further survived by his uncle, Leonard S. (Jean) Bleininger; as well as great nieces and nephews, Mariah L. Winkhart, Clay M. Winkhart, Bonnie J. Winkhart, Randall C. Winkhart, Ruger M. Huntsman and Charlee R. Huntsman.

Due to Covid concerns, a private, family funeral will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2020, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Navarre. Rev. Carl Kandel will preside. Burial with military honors will follow at Union Lawn Cemetery where friends may attend. There are no calling hours.

The family has suggested memorial contributions to Fohl Memorial United Methodist Church or Navarre VFW Post 5047. Your memories and condolences are always welcomed and may be added to our online guestbook.
