Joan M. Selzer, 94, of Massillon, passed away peacefully, Friday evening, May 26, 2023, with her family gathered at her side. Born December 17, 1928, in Canton, Ohio, to the late Vern and Dorothy (Sheffler) Heim, Joan graduated from Louisville High School in 1946. In 1947, she played the trumpet as a member of The Cleveland Browns George “Red” Bird’s Musical Majorettes. She was a member of First Christian Church in Massillon and retired from Eaton Corporation in 1979. A devoted wife, mom, step-mom, grandma, great-grandma, and great-great-grandma, Joan placed her family first in all things. She loved dancing, playing golf, bocce ball, cards, crossword puzzles, and especially music of the Big Band era - Engelbert Humperdinck and Lawrence Welk being her favorites. She also loved her trips with husband, Dick, to their home at The Villages in Florida.
Preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Richard Selzer and Ray Snodgrass; son David Snodgrass; grandson, Scott Stevens, granddaughter, Cara Selzer; and twin sister, Jane Heim; Joan is survived by her son, Gary “Dutch” (Cindy) Stevens, and daughter, Patricia (Walt) Werchanowskyj; step-daughter, Kay Coulter, step-son, Richard (Suzanne) Selzer, step-son William “Keith” Selzer, step-daughter, Jayne (Thomas) Reinarts, and step-daughter, Cheryl (Marv) Strach; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and many friends here in Massillon and in Florida.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2023, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. Pastor Sara Coons will officiate, and interment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive condolences one hour prior to the service, from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
