The family of Janet I. Starrett, 93, of Massillon, wishes to announce her passing on Tuesday evening, September 5, 2023, to be with the Lord and loved ones, while surrounded by the loving family she leaves behind. Born in Carrollton, Ohio, August 27, 1930, a daughter to the late Albert and Pauline (McIntire) Winings, Janet graduated from Carrollton High School with the Class of 1948. A 1951 graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Canton, she worked as a registered nurse at Timken Mercy Hospital, the former Massillon Community Hospital, and for twenty years in the office of the late Dr. A.R. Furnas, MD. She married James Starrett on November 22, 1951, and had been a Massillon resident since 1954.
A member of the Methodist faith her entire life, Janet joined the faith community of Central Presbyterian Church in 2014. She was also a member of the Senior Fellowship at Grace United Church of Christ. She was active in the Harvey and Lorin Andrews PTA, and the Choir and Swim Boosters at Washington High School. Her social memberships included 53 years with the Massillon Mothers of Twins Club. She also served as president of the Ohio Federation of Mothers of Twins, and in 2012, received an honorary lifetime membership in the Federation.
Predeceased by her parents; her husband of 58 years, James H. “Jim” Starrett; a son, Jack L. Starrett; an infant brother, and a sister and brother-in-law, Lois (Glenn) Marshall; Janet is survived by her sons, James L. (Barbara) Starrett, John L. (Julie) Starrett, all of Massillon, Jerry L. Starrett, of Mansfield, Ohio, and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Terri Starrett, also of Massillon; grandchildren, Abbie (Jason) Deuble, Shae Allman, Jonathan (Nicole) Starrett, Justin (Megan) Starrett, Beth (Josh) Hirschman, Patrick Starrett, Austin (Katelyn) Starrett, Shawnell (Ryan) Queen, and Danica Starrett; great-grandchildren, Logan and Landon Allman, Madison and Hudson Starrett, Archer Starrett, Ethan and Jarrett Deuble, Grayson, Lyla and Flynn Queen, Elizabeth and Gavin Starrett, and Harlow, Hadley and Harper Hirschman. Other survivors include her sisters, Mrs. Rita Mandley, of Atwood Lake and Marco Island, Florida, and Bonnie (Russ) McDermott, of Salem, Ohio, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Pegg Dodson, of St. Augustine, Florida.
Family and friends will join Rev. Dr. Juliann Joy, pastor of Central Presbyterian Church, in celebration of Janet’s life at 12:30 p.m. Monday, September 11, 2023, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. The family will receive condolences one hour prior to the service, from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in the funeral home. A private burial will follow at Sunset Hills Burial Park.
