Hiram Eugene “Gene” Bair, 96, a long-time resident of Massillon, Ohio, went home to be with our Lord on October 10, 2025. Gene passed peacefully under the loving care of the Amherst Meadows and Crossroads Hospice staff.
The son of Helen and Roy Bair, Gene was born January 29, 1929, in Dover/New Philadelphia, Ohio, and was one of seven children. He attended Washington High School before joining the Merchant Marines and then the Army to serve in the Korean War from 1950 – 1953. After serving his Country, Gene went to work for Central States Canning and later retired as a truck driver from Peoples Cartage.
Gene was a wonderful person and loved his family very much. He was always helping others and had a kind heart. He worked very hard all his life to provide for his family. We will miss his sense of humor and his presence in our lives.
Preceded in death by his wife Pauline J. (Weiford) Bair, and three children, Patrick, Ellen Marie and David; two grandchildren, BJ and Josh; his six siblings Grace, Bill, Larry, Harry, Cub, and Laura; and his son-in-law, Bill Castora; Gene is survived by his children, Allen (Terri) Bair, Roy (Becky) Bair, Bill (Rita) Bair, Anita Castora, Mike (Pam) Bair, and Linda Styer. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. During his illness, his granddaughter Kristina made sure her grandpa was well taken care of and was his most frequent visitor.
Family and friends are welcome to attend Gene’s home-going services that will be held on Friday, October 24, 2025. Calling hours will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the funeral at 11:00 a.m. at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home at 26 – 2nd Street NE, Massillon. Ohio. Military honors will close the service, and burial will follow at Brookfield Cemetery where he will be entered into rest next to his wife, Pauline.
The family has suggested memorial donations to either Meals on Wheels, 2363 Nave Rd SE, Massillon, OH 44646 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, (stjude.org/donate). Your memories and condolences are always welcome and may be added here to Gene's on-line guestbook.
“And so, dad, until we meet again!”
