Herman W. McClurg, of Massillon, following a life of service to his nation, his faith community and his neighbors, passed away peacefully, Saturday morning, June 5, 2021, in Maumee, Ohio at the age of 97. Born July 11, 1923, in Strasburg, Ohio, a son to the late Willis N. and Emma (Masters) McClurg, Herm graduated from the former Navarre High School with the Class of 1941. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in early 1942, earning the rank of Sergeant and serving with distinction with the Second Marine Air Wing in the South Pacific. Returning to civilian life, he worked as a truck driver for Nickles Bakery and for Coca-Cola Bottling before becoming a licensed agent for Prudential Insurance. After retiring from Prudential, he continued working as a bus driver for Jackson Local Schools.
One of the longest-lived and faithful members of Central Presbyterian Church in Massillon, Herm was very active in his church. He served as a deacon and elder, taught Sunday school and began the Men’s Brotherhood Bible Study group – participating in regular, weekly bible study until late last year. He was also active in the Navarre VFW Post 5047, serving as a past post commander, as well as in Scouting, earning a 4th Year Pipestone Award as an adult leader with BSA Troop 905. In his leisure time he enjoyed traveling – especially on much anticipated trips with his grandchildren, and with his late wife, Marjorie, as members of Elder Hostel. He also enjoyed fishing, and with quiet pride, watching his sons and grandchildren in their many sporting and arts events.
Predeceased by his parents; sister, Thelma Jean McClurg Jekubic; his first wife, Louise A. (Merryman) McClurg and second wife, Marjorie G. (Roderick) Fox McClurg; Herm is survived by his sons, Alan (Corrine) McClurg, of Johnstown, Ohio and Kurt (Stephanie) McClurg, of Whitehouse, Ohio. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Theresa (Joshua) McClurg-Genevese, of Columbus and Timothy (Brandy) McClurg, of Worthington, Emma, Evan and Quintin McClurg, all of Whitehouse; 9 great-grandchildren; a nephew, Mike (Joyce) Loretto; step-son Roger (Jeanne) Fox, of Massillon, step-granddaughters, Christine (Jeff) Fox Thornsbury and Victoria (Steven) Lambert; and a host of very dear friends.
