Herbert W. Ashbridge, 88, of Massillon, passed away peacefully but quite unexpectedly, at his home, on Sunday, November 5, 2023. Born in Canton, November 14, 1934, a son to the late William R. and Dorothy H. (Mannweiler) Ashbridge, Herb attended Massillon Washington High School and remained a city resident and a loyal Tiger fan throughout his life. He retired from the former Republic Steel Corp. in Massillon following 46 years of dedicated service. Formally received into the Catholic church in 1990, Herb was a member of Divine Mercy Parish at St. Barbara. But he was living his faith commitment well before then. A devoted husband, a loving and supportive dad, and a gentle, mischievous, and fun-loving grandpa and great-grandpa, Herb placed his wife, his daughters, and his extended family at the center of his life. He was there for them at school and sports events, recitals, birthdays, holidays, and the happy and sad days in each of their lives that were so closely and completely entwined with his. He had a genial, competitive nature that drew him toward sports, from marbles to pool, basketball, and baseball, to golf and poker - he spent his life enjoying a good game! Grandpa Herbie loved spending his leisure time with the family, especially his great-grandchildren who were the light of his life in recent years. Herbie loved watching his beloved Tigers and the Browns, getting in a round of golf, shooting pool or playing cards with friends.
Predeceased by his parents; his wife of 65 years, Florence A. (Nussbaumer) Ashbridge; their daughters, Barbara Ashbridge Mehling and Susan Ashbridge Sturm; a grandson, Gus Mehling; his sisters, Donna Ashbridge (and brother-in-law, Tom) Reed, and Judith Ashbridge Griffiths, and brothers, Robert (and sister-in-law, Norma,) and David Ashbridge; Herb is survived by eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, Mike Mehling, and Mark Sturm; sisters, Nancy (Keith) Paulus, Peggy (James) Huffman and Mary (Charles) Tucker; sister-in-law, Mrs. Jane Ashbridge, brother-in-law, William Griffiths; and many nieces and nephews.
Honoring Herb’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends will mark his passing with a memorial Mass, celebrated with Fr. John Sheridan at St. Barbara’s Church at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. There are no calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. Your memories and condolences are always welcome and may be added here to Herb’s on-line guestbook.
