Evelyn Hay Obituary

Evelyn A. Hay, of Navarre, following a long and purposeful life, was received into the arms of her Savior on Wednesday afternoon, January 13, 2021 – just five days prior to marking her 100th birthday!  Born on the family farm near Canton, a daughter to the late Dwight A. and Mary A. (Smith) Whitmer, in 1937, her junior year of high school, Evelyn was a delegate to the 4-H Congress in Columbus.  Later in her adulthood, besides being a busy, full-time wife and mother, she returned to school, completed her nursing certificate and worked as an LPN at the former Massillon Psychiatric Hospital.

A devoted wife and a loving and supportive mom, grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma, Evelyn was an active and faithful member of Fohl Memorial United Methodist Church in Navarre where she taught Sunday school, bible school and attended the Women’s Bible Study.  Her family and her faith community meant everything to her.  A lifetime of treasured memories and much love is the legacy she leaves.

Predeceased by her parents; her husband, Miles T. Hay, Jr., daughter, Nada Hay McAfee; and brothers, Ray, Lloyd and Stanley Whitmer; Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann (Jon) Goudy, of Millersburg, and son, Michael Thomas “Tom” Hay, of North Canton.  Also surviving are her grandchildren, Kelly (Andy) Hebert, Ryan (Heidi) McAfee, Kimberly (John) Bookmeyer, Michael (Kimberly) Hay, Jessica (Joe) Puperi, Steven (Lydia) Goudy, Laura Taliesin and Eric (Suzanne) Goudy; there are 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; son-in-law, Bob McAfee; and sisters-in-law, Mrs. Betty Whitmer and Mrs. Joyce Whitmer.

Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be conducted following a truly fitting celebration of her life once the current Covid conditions have abated.  The family has suggested memorial contributions to advance the mission and ministries of Fohl Memorial UMC, 121 Basin Street, NW, Navarre, Ohio 44662.
