Esther E. Shallenberger, 96, of Massillon, a beloved mom, grandma, great-grandma, and aunt, passed away peacefully, while she slept, early Saturday morning, October 15, 2022. Born in Massillon, April 2, 1926, a daughter to the late Karl and Elizabeth (Schweikert) Link, Sr., Esther - affectionately called “Toots,” graduated from Washington High School with the Class of 1944. She worked as a secretary in the offices of the former Central States Can Co., now Crown Cork & Seal, in Massillon, for more than twenty years, retiring in 1990. Esther had been a volunteer at the former Doctors Hospital for ten years and enjoyed a very full and active social life with memberships that included the Massillon Lady Lions, Sons & Daughters of Herman, and CSC Retirees Club. She also enjoyed traveling and playing cards.
Predeceased by her parents; her husband of more than fifty years, Walter R. “Wally” Shallenberger; daughter, Bethany Shallenberger Turowski; brothers, Karl Link, Jr. and Robert Link, and sisters, Ruth (and Floyd) Schlegel and Alice (and Ralph) Creter; Esther is survived by her children, Kim Shallenberger, of Canton, Lynette (Michael) Shallenberger Micks, of Massillon, and Jodi (Ron) Heck, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; grandchildren, Michael Chipples, Jason Shallenberger, Stephanie (Johnny) Cordia, Brian James Montgomery and Angela Lyn Montgomery; great-grandchildren, Christina Marie, Mykaela Paige, Sean Patric, Emily Sue, K-lyana, Angel and Jazmynn. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
In keeping with Esther’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends will mark her passing with a gathering in the mausoleum chapel at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Massillon, on Friday, November 4, 2022, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Inurnment will follow. The family would prefer no additional flowers. Instead, please consider a donation in Esther's memory made to your local Salvation Army office.
