Dorothy Marie Rook took her final breath on Monday, March 12, 2018, as her spirit soared to meet her Heavenly Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Born in Massillon, January 17, 1928, the youngest of four children to the late David and Clara Dunbar, she shared her birthday with her older brother, Robert. A life-long resident of Massillon, Dorothy met her future husband, Robert Ralph “Bob” Rook, also of Massillon, while ice skating. Bob always said when they first met, she literally “knocked him off his feet,” as she skated into him making him fall. They were married on September 21, 1946, in St. John’s United Church of Christ. Dorothy worked at the Ecko Company, Buckeye Trophy and Massillon State Hospital where she retired after twenty-five years of service. A wonderful seamstress, she made many clothes for her children when they were young. She also worked side by side with Bob in their younger days, as they built their homes in the Massillon area. She even had her own Lawn Boy mower so she could help with mowing the yard. She enjoyed her “snowbird years” in Zephyrhills, Florida, picking delicious strawberries and squeezing freshly picked oranges from the tree in her backyard for orange juice. Dorothy moved to The Waterford, an assisted living community in Mansfield in March, 2017. With declining health she moved to The Good Shepherd Nursing Home in November of 2017.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy is preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Rook and brothers, Robert and Howard Dunbar. She is survived by her three children, David (Patt) Rook, of San Leandro, CA, Sue Koozer (Dr. Thomas Marquardt), of Mansfield and Keith Rook, of Galt, CA; her grandchildren, Michael A. Rook, of San Leandro, CA, Lee Ann Rice, of Massillon, Shawnell (Ryan) Starrett Queen, of Amelia, OH and Danica Noel Starrett, of Mansfield; great-grandchildren, Bobby, Matthew and Gretta Anderson and Kenny Rice, all of Massillon and Grayson, Lyla and Flynn Queen, all of Amelia. She is also survived by her sister, Edna Rudolph, formerly of Massillon.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. Pastor Jean Montgomery of St. John's UCC will officiate and a private burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive condolences one hour prior to the service, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
A special thanks to Greg for all of your help and support with Dorothy and to Barbara who made wonderful cupcakes for her.
