Dorothy Jones Obituary

Dorothy Jones passed away at age 97 on June 28. 2017. She was born on April 3, 1920, and was the daughter of Arthur and Dora (Seifert) Eberly of Navarre, Ohio. Dorothy graduated from Navarre High School in 1938. She married Donald F. Jones in 1944 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1994. Donald was the president of Navarre Deposit Bank in Navarre until his death in 1999. They had 3 children: Daniel (Mary) of Westerville, Ohio; Marged (Richard Tormasi) of Massillon and Naples, Florida; and John of Navarre, Ohio. Dorothy enjoyed her 2 granddaughters: Hilary (Kyle Leubin) of Austin, Texas; and Meredith (Sam Ross) of Westerville, Ohio. She is survived by 10 nieces and 6 nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her 2 brothers: Gerald Eberly of Navarre, and John Eberly of Durango, Colorado; and a sister, Alice Huth of Navarre.
Dorothy loved living in the country outside Navarre surrounded by her husband's trees. Their home was built on the farm where she grew up, where she drove the horses in the field when they made hay. They had no indoor plumbing. She remembered canning and freezing vegetables and fruit, especially peaches, for the upcoming winter. Her favorite activities were sewing, cooking and baking, and playing cards with her friends Jane, Marge, and Joyce at Anderson's in Navarre on Fridays. She loved people and enjoyed seeing everyone at Anderson's and usually knew their great-grandparents! She had an incredible memory and loved to reminisce about friends and “the good old days.” Dorothy completed the Independent crossword puzzle every day and loved doing “Bent and Wiggly” puzzles.  She loved feeding the birds and taking care of her cats Grace, Mittens, and Lily.  Her favorite TV programs were the cooking channel, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy. She was a close follower of the Indians and wore her Cavs t-shirt watching her beloved Cavaliers. Dorothy loved to travel to the beach, out West, Amish Country, and to Florida where she loved sea food and watching the people.
Dorothy was in charge of OOO (“On Our Own”) at Saint Paul's in Navarre for 8 years and enjoyed organizing their outings to area restaurants. She loved clothes and made her own starting at age 14. She used her feet to operate the machine (treadle). She was encouraged by her father to buy material in Navarre. She made her Senior Prom dress, and made Marged's 30 years later. She also made many dresses for her granddaughters.
She loved Heggy's peanut clusters, chocolate ice cream and sodas, and pecans. Dorothy was known for her cherry pie, noodles, pot pie, and cut-out Christmas cookies.
Dorothy was a member of Fohl United Methodist Church of Navarre where she attended for 97 years and served as a greeter and on committees. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at 11a.m. at Fohl Memorial United Methodist Church , 121 Basin Street NW, Navarre, Ohio 44662 with Rev. Dave West officiating.
