Dale Edward Young

Dale E. Young, 92, of Massillon, passed away peacefully, Tuesday afternoon, September 24, 2024.  Born in Massillon, November 8, 1931, the son and only child  of the late Chester and Mary Helen Young, Dale graduated from Washington High School with the Class of 1949.  He completed undergraduate studies at Capital University and received his master’s degree from Kent State University. 

His teaching career began in 1953, at Medina High School.  He stepped away from the classroom from 1955-’57 to complete a military enlistment, earning the rank of Specialist 3rd Class while serving as an analyst with the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Corps. in Panama.  Returning to Massillon in the fall of 1957, he also returned to his alma mater, Washington High School, as a Spanish teacher, where he taught until his retirement in 1983.  A truly gifted linguist and master of the Spanish language, Dale loved teaching – especially there at the high school.  And he received several professional and peer honors and accolades throughout his career, recognizing his dedication, innovation, leadership and stewardship of his profession.   

Dale preferred a modest, practical, and independent life-style.  He was well liked and kindly regarded by those who knew him.  He never owned a pet but was known to leave his door open in welcome to any stray cats that needed a bite to eat or a place to rest.  Most significant of these was his pal, "Beggar."  Dale attended St. John’s United Church of Christ, in Massillon, and his social memberships included the Massillon Museum, Spring Hill Historic Home, and the Massillon Heritage Foundation, several professional organizations, and social fraternities.  In his leisure time he enjoyed model railroading, gardening, traveling, museums, concerts, live theater, and dinner with friends and former colleagues.   

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 30, 2024, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon.  Military honors will close the service, and a private burial will follow. There are no calling hours.
