Carol J. Guthrie, 81, of Massillon, beloved mother, grandma and great-grandma, passed away quietly, Thursday afternoon, May 6, 2021, following an unexpected decline in health. Born September 26, 1939, in Northampton, Township, Summit County, Ohio, a daughter to the late Harley H. and Bertha Mae (Brown) Guthrie, Carol graduated from Hudson High School with the Class of 1958. Throughout her adulthood, most of which was spent in the Massillon area, besides being a full-time mom, she worked several different jobs until settling into the one she truly loved and finally retired from, with Bates Printing, Inc., in Massillon. While working at Bates Printing, she also shared a vendor booth at the Dover Flea Market with her son, Darrell, for more than 20 years.
Carol attended Open Bible Church and in her leisure time she loved tending her vegetable and flower gardens – passing her enjoyment of growing things on to her son Darrell; and she loved to sew – with her legacy of handwork now continuing through her daughter, Debbie. She enjoyed summer evening concerts at Tuscora Park and following Massillon Tiger and Cleveland Browns football in the fall; she enjoyed Gospel music and was a great fan of NASCAR.
Predeceased by her parents; and siblings, Donald, James, Dean, Geraldine and Gertrude; Carol is survived by her daughter, Deborah D. (Rev. Steven) James, of Verona, New York and son, Darrell G. Guthrie, with whom she shared her home; her grandchildren, Keith James, of New Hartford, New York, Kristina Payne, of Darien, Illinois, Cody Guthrie, of Navarre and Heather Henderhan, of Canton; great-grandchildren, Abigail, Braden, Morgan, Grayson, Natalie, Noah, Serenitee, Starrlette, Lillee, Summer, Matthew and Kloey. A brother, Charles Guthrie, of Logan, Georgia, also survives, together with a large extended family and a host of treasured friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at Open Bible Christian Center in Massillon. Dr. Phillip Greenaway and Carol's son-in-law, Rev. Steven James will officiate. Burial will follow at East Union Lawn Cemetery in Navarre. The family will receive condolences one hour prior to the service, from 10-11:00 a.m., in the church. Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Navarre has been entrusted with arrangements.
