Barbara C. Mertes

Barbara C. Mertes, 90, of Massillon, passed away peacefully, early Wednesday morning, December 23, 2020.  Born May 2, 1930, to the late Clement “Chick” and Mary Mertes, Barabara had been a life resident of Massillon.  She graduated from Washington High School and Massillon City Hospital School of Nursing, then went on to earn her undergraduate degree from Western Reserve University and her graduate degree from Columbia University.  Barbara served as the Director of the MCH School of Nursing for twenty-six years.  When the school closed, she was awarded the status of Dean Emeritus by the MCH Board of Trustees.  She then became Director of Development at MCH. 

A devoted member of Central Presbyterian Church in Massillon, Barbara will be remembered for her love of animals, especially her canine pets; her elaborate and beautiful Christmas and Halloween decorations and her strong, independent spirit.  She is survived by her cousins, Richard (Michele) Mertes, James (Donna) Mertes and Maryanne (Harold) Fishburgh, who will mark her passing with a private service and inurnment.  They have also suggested memorial contributions made to Central Presbyterian Church.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon where your memories and condolences are always welcome and may be added to our on-line guestbook at www.atkinsonfeucht.com.
