Mary Genie (Summers) Ross

Mary Genie Ross, of Massillon, her earthy pilgrimage of 88 years now complete, passed away in the comfort of her home on Thursday evening, September 20, 2018.  Born in Akron, December 8, 1929, the daughter of the late Leonard and Irene (Muck) Summers, Genie graduated from Akron Kenmore High School with the Class of 1947.  She worked only briefly outside of home before her children were born.  Thereafter she was a full-time wife and mom and later grandma and great-grandma.  The home she created for her husband and family was one of warmth, grace and enduring hospitality.  She loved to entertain.  Her guests were eagerly greeted with, “What can I get you?” And as a gifted cook and baker, she always had something to share or to send home with company.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing bridge.  She preferred a visit and old fashioned conversation to email and social media and to that end, she liked to travel – especially when the trip ended with seeing the grandkids.  Like her late husband, Hank, Genie was an energetic collector – especially of Christmas ornaments.  Her energy and imagination were hard to contain.  Fortunately, it was most often her extended family that included the faith community of Central Presbyterian Church who would benefit from her servant’s heart and generous spirit.

Predeceased by her parents; her brother, Leonard Summers; and her husband, William H. Ross; Genie is survived by her children, Mary Ross, of Massillon, Lilly (Ted) Ross-Minor, of Memphis, Tennesee, Katie (David) Ross-Spencer, of Austin, Texas and Tom (Sandy) Ross, also of Massillon; grandchildren, Heather, Quinn, Gray, Steven, Daniel, Luke and Joseph.  Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Carolyn Summers, of Wadsworth, Ohio.

A service in celebration of the life of Genie Ross will be conducted on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at the noon hour, at Central Presbyterian Church in Massillon.  Pastor Larry Lalama will officiate.  The family will receive condolences one hour prior to the service, from 11-12:00 p.m. in the church.  Memorial contributions made in care of Central Presbyterian Church, the Massillon Museum or Aultman Hospice would be warmly appreciated.
