Helen M. Powell, 90, entered at last into the presence of her Savior, on Friday afternoon, October 6, 2017. Her children were at her side. She was born December 26, 1926, in Hartford, CT, a daughter to the late Robert T. and Mabel (Ludwig) Pye. While brilliantly accomplished in her own right, Helen was foremost a loving wife and mom, grandma and great-grandma. As a pastor’s wife, she joined her late husband, Rev. Delmar S. Powell, in a life of service to Christ through his church. Working side-by-side as missionaries for four years in Jaraniyo, Ethiopia, she had studied at the Debra-Berhan Language School and was there at the founding of Jaraniyo Baptist Bible Church. Here at home, they were together at the founding of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Massillon. She later retired as the longest-serving civilian employee of the Orange County Florida Sheriff’s Office.
Predeceased by her parents; her husband of 62 years; her daughter-in-law, Jodie Powell; three great-grandchildren and three brothers; Helen is survived by her children, Gerry Powell and Penny (Rev. Tom) Fryman, all of the area; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, October 10, 2017, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. Helen’s grandson, Rev. Joshua Fryman will officiate and a private burial will follow at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. The family will receive guests in the funeral home prior to the service from 5-7:00 p.m. The family also extends heart-felt thanks to the staff of the Chapel Hill Community and Mercy Hospice for the care their mother received.
