Florence Ann Ashbridge, 83, of Massillon, after having fought bravely against the effects of Parkinson’s disease, dementia and osteoarthritis, passed away peacefully at her home, with her family at her side, on Monday morning, August 5, 2019. Born in Massillon, April 15, 1936, a daughter to the late Albert and Catherine (Weinand) Nussbaumer, Florence attended Central Catholic High School. A life member of St. Barbara Catholic Church, she had worked for 25 years as a dietary aide at the former Massillon City Hospital as well in retail sales with the former William Annat Co. in Wooster and the BP station at the corner of 27th St. and Lincoln Way East. A devoted wife and a loving mom, grandma and great-grandma, Florence cherished her family and held tightly to her faith. A 13-year breast cancer survivor, she was truly the light of her home who “looked well to the ways of her household,” and enjoyed playing BINGO; loved to shop and looked forward to trips to Amish country and out to Las Vegas.
Preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Barbara Ashbridge Mehling; and grandson, Gus Mehling; her sisters, Mildred Stine and Mary Margaret Radel and brother, Clarence Nussbaumer; Florence is survived by her husband of 65 years, Herbert W. Ashbridge, of the home and their daughter, Susan (Mark) Sturm, of Massillon. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Amanda, Alex, Michelle, Kris, Nick, Lacy and Sam; 14 great-grandchildren; brother Joseph Nussbaumer, of Massillon and son-in-law, Mike Mehling, of Columbus.
Fr. Thomas Cebula will celebrate a memorial Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 9, 2019, at St. Barbara Church in Massillon. A private burial will follow in the parish cemetery. There are no calling hours. Family and friends will gather in the church Friday morning before Mass. The family wishes to extend their heart-felt thanks to the staff of Mercy Hospice and most especially to Florence’s dear friend and caregiver, Darcy. They have also suggested memorial contributions made in care of the National Parkinson’s Research Foundation.
