Ellen G. Spuhler, 88, of Canton, passed away quietly, early Thursday morning, February 8, 2018. We’re glad in knowing that our mom and grandma has moved beyond days of pain and uncertainty into the warm and welcomed embrace of her Savior. But we will miss her dearly. She was born September 21, 1929, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, a daughter to the late Harry and Goldie (Baker) Gardner. Following high school, she completed studies at the Jefferson College of Nursing in Philadelphia, becoming a registered nurse and specializing in neonatal and pediatric care. Twenty-five years of her professional career were spent with the former Massillon City/Massillon Community Hospital. A member of Church of the Lakes United Methodist Congregation, Ellen was one of the “Golden Girls.” She enjoyed golf and bowling and her social memberships included the Lady Lions and the Airstream Trailer Camping Club. She and her late husband, Frank, founded the YWCA Family Campers Trailer Club.
Predeceased by her parents; her husband of 55 years, Frank E. Spuhler; sister, Phyllis Gardner and brother, Merle Gardner; Ellen is survived by her sons, Lynn (Joyce) Spuhler, of LaQuinta, California and Lee (Sherry) Spuhler, of Paris Twp.; her grandchildren, Greig Spuhler, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Kristi and Kirk Spuhler, both of this area; sister-in-law, Cindy Gardner and niece, Cheri Gardner, both of Florida.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. Rev. Les Peine will officiate and private burial will follow at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive guests one hour prior to the service Saturday morning, from 11-12:00 in the funeral home.
