Edward A. Machuga, 71, of Canton, formerly of Navarre, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, November 30, 2019, while surrounded by his family. Born in Canton, February 18, 1948, a son to the late Edward and Eleanor (Allen) Machuga, Ed attended Canton St. Joseph grade school; graduated from Central Catholic High School with the Class of 1966 and had attended Walsh College. He was a retired Teamster with Canton Local 92 and employed throughout his career with several current and former area businesses including Sugardale Foods, Inc., John Hancock Life Insurance Company, Jacobson Home Furnishings, Ohio Battery & Ignition, Fleming Foods and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Massillon. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Ed was a member of St. Clement/Holy Family Parish in Navarre, faithfully and actively serving in several aspects of parish life as well as in the Navarre, Fairless and Central Catholic communities. He held membership in the Knights of Columbus Navarre Council 5582 and served as a past-president of the Navarre Baseball/Softball Association and Fairless Midget Football Association. He was a former member of the Fairless Linebackers Association and worked the sidelines as a member of “the chain gang” at Central football games. Among his favorite pastimes was enthusiastically following CCHS, Ohio State and Notre Dame Football. He loved telling stories of times that included growing up in South Bend, Indiana following World War II while his father attended the University of Notre Dame, and his own playing days on the football team at Central – he was a freshman when (Professional Football Hall of Famer and Minnesota Associate Supreme Court Justice) Alan Page was a senior…! He’d also want to tell you of the time he built a barn from scratch and of the times he spent cutting firewood so the family could keep snug and warm as the seasons changed.
Predeceased by his parents; Ed is survived by his dear wife of 49 years, Miriam R. (Hoover) Machuga, of the home - they met while they worked together at John Hancock; their children, Jennifer Shafer, of Navarre, Joseph (Stephanie) Machuga, of Canton, Julia (Coy) Pierce, of Allen, Texas and James (Emily) Machuga, also of Navarre.
